The Building as Learning Aid (BaLA) concept is an innovative approach to improving the quality of education in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs). The concept involves developing the school’s physical environment to be child-friendly and fun, and to support learning in all areas. The BaLA concept is based on the idea that the school’s architecture can be a resource for teaching and learning. The BaLA concept was originally developed by the Vinyas Centre for Architectural Research & Design with support from UNICEF. The concept is based on the following principles: Activity-based learning The school’s physical environment should support a variety of learning activities, including small group learning, individual reading, and project work. Inclusive education The school’s physical environment should be inclusive of children with special needs. Creative expression The school’s physical environment should promote creative thought and expression.
